Gin, lime, honeydew, green Chartreuse and fresh cracked pepper make a spicy and bright cocktail.

photo by Blake BonillasThe Green Lantern superhero movie may have been a bomb at the box office, but the lovely, cool-looking cocktail of the same name has been a blockbuster at The House Brasserie since the restaurant’s inception six years ago. It’s a riff on the Last Word, a pre-Prohibition cocktail made with gin, green Chartreuse, lime and maraschino liqueur, which serves as the launching pad for House’s own tart, faintly sweet spin, served up in a coupe with a dash of black pepper and a spicy slice of bright green serrano chile. Utilizing Arizona Distilling Co.’s Commerce gin (heady with cardamom, coriander, cumin, cinnamon and citrus), it packs a big, bold, herbaceous wallop – kind of like the Green Lantern when he’s wearing his magic power ring.

You won’t need special powers to make this at home, however. Just add 1 ½ oz. Commerce gin, ¾ oz. lime juice, ¾ oz. honeydew syrup* and ½ oz. green Chartreuse to a cocktail shaker, fill it with ice, shake until ingredients are cold and double-strain the mixture into a chilled coupe or martini glass. Garnish with freshly ground black pepper and a serrano slice.

*First make a 1:1 ratio of simple syrup (one cup water, one cup sugar) and set aside. After peeling a honeydew melon, blend the pulp, then add the pulp to the simple syrup in a 1:1 ratio and pass the mixture through a fine strainer for a smooth, sweet syrup.
