Will the East Valley soon be in good hands with Allstate?

Over the past year, Amazon has made weekly headlines with the outrageous stunt gifts cities have offered to woo the tech giant to establish headquarters within their limits. If anything similar is happening with insurance giant Allstate, they’re doing a terrific job covering it up.

An anonymous inside source tipped us off that the Northfield Township, Illinois-based company may be eyeing Arizona for a secondary headquarters – particularly the booming tech corridor of the East Valley.

Allstate is the second-largest insurance provider in the United States, according to a 2016 report by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and had nearly $104.7 billion in assets as of the end of 2015. In 2012, it consolidated three Arizona offices into a regional headquarters in downtown Tempe with about 300 people, but a more robust HQ may transpire in Chandler or Gilbert in the coming year.

Why Chandler or Gilbert? Our source says Tempe’s too close to competitor MetLife, which has a strong foothold in the college town. Apparently corporate decision-makers from Allstate have visited both burgs and were impressed by the tech presence and livability – housing in these up-and-coming Phoenix suburbs is much cheaper than in the tony Chicago suburbs, which sources say have witnessed a business exodus in recent years.

Press contacts at Allstate did not respond to multiple email and phone interview requests. Chandler and Gilbert media representatives were also mum. “At this time, we are unable to confirm any details,” Chandler public information officer Stephanie Romero says via email.

Gilbert digital media and marketing officer Jennifer Alvarez teases in her email response: “We don’t have anything to release at this time, but may have some information to share in the coming weeks.”

We’re on tenterhooks.
